The University has long-term experience in conducting health awareness programs for the benefit of the community. It offers programs and projects to the local community to improve and promote health. In the last year, the University hosted several events about sports law on the portal www.iusradioweblaw. Additionally, a consortium composed of UniMe, the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology and UniCT produced "PACE", a software tool to support radiologists in the fight against COVID-19. There was also an initiative called “Pink October” sponsored by the Medical Oncology Unit with the Hospice Center of the "Gaetano Martino" University Hospital. The purpose of the project was dedicated to women to increase awareness about breast cancer- the prevention, early diagnosis and therapeutic perspectives of breast cancer.
A web talk dedicated to "Sports Law" was broadcasted on the portal www.iusradioweblaw.it on November 27, 2020 with the collaboration of some students of the University Law Department. The broadcast was dedicated to the role of women in sports. It was produced through collaboration between Ius Law Web Radio, the Sports Law Chair of the UniME Law Department, and the Sicilian section of the Italian Association of Sports Lawyers.
A consortium composed of the University of Messina, the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology and the University of Catania has developed a software tool, called PACE, to support radiologists in the fight against COVID-19. In COVID-19 patients, radiological evaluation of lung lesions is necessary for monitoring the evolution of the disease and the response to specific therapies. This activity is complicated by the fact that patients, especially in the acute phase of the disease, are not collaborative and / or are in intensive care. PACE was developed to solve this problem by optimizing the contrast of chest X-ray images. The results of the research activities have been published in the scientific journal Sustainability 2020 and are available at the link (https://www.mdpi.com/2071-1050/12/20/8573).
A series of articles on prevention, early diagnosis and therapeutic perspectives of breast cancer were published in UniversoMe (multimedia newspaper of the students of the University of Messina) in the last week of October 2020. "Pink October" is the month for the prevention of this frequent tumor pathology, which unfortunately has seen a significant reduction in the number of health services aimed at early identification, due to the COVID-19 emergency. The program of the initiative also includes an overview of the "Gaetano Martino" University Hospital Medical Oncology Unit with Hospice, directed by Prof. Giuseppe Altavilla.
